Most brands talk about engagement. They want more likes, more views, and more comments. But in my experience working with wellness and community-based brands, engagement is not the real goal. The real goal is belonging.
I believe marketers need a new term: Real Belonging.
Real Belonging happens when people don’t just follow a brand, they feel connected to it. They feel understood. They see their values reflected in it. It’s the difference between someone liking your content and someone feeling proud to be part of your community.
Douglas Holt talks about “crowdculture,” explaining that strong brands connect with cultural movements instead of just promoting products. I think Real Belonging is what happens when that cultural connection becomes personal. When people don’t just buy from you, they identify with you.
In the wellness space, this is very clear. A yoga studio doesn’t grow because of discounts or constant promotions. It grows because people feel safe, supported, and emotionally connected. That feeling creates trust. Trust creates loyalty. Loyalty creates growth.
If marketers focused more on creating Real Belonging instead of chasing engagement metrics, they would design their strategies differently. They would ask:
- Does this reflect who our community truly is?
- Are we building trust or just visibility?
- Are we creating connection or just content?
In the future, the brands that grow the most will not be the loudest ones. They will be the ones that make people feel like they truly belong. And that changes everything.
